Baku Heydar Aliyev International Airport is one of the six international airports serving Azerbaijan. Formerly, it was called Bina International Airport by the name of a suburb in Baku. On 10 March 2004, it was renamed after Azerbaijan's nationwide leader Heydar Aliyev. Airport is located in Baku, the capital and largest city of Azerbaijan. The airport is approximately 25 kilometers east from downtown Baku with a traveling time of approximately 40 minutes. The airport has a wide range of shops, restaurants and cafes as well as Duty Free stores in both the departures and arrivals areas. Its geographical location facilitates transfer flights between East and West and between North and South.
Two passenger terminals and two cargo terminals operate at Heydar Aliyev International Airport and equipped with a Building Management System (BMS) which is designed to automate processes and operations that are implemented in modern buildings and is the technical basis of the so-called intelligent buildings. Airport total area is 65,000 square meters. It was designed for 6 million passengers per year. It currently serves up to 3 million passengers annually.
In May 2018 Heydar Aliyev International Airport was awarded the maximum category of "5 stars" by the Skytrax, which is influential British consulting company specializing in the study of the quality of services provided by various airlines and airports worldwide. Also Heydar Aliyev Airport was named the best airport among airports of Russia and CIS countries for the level of the provided services, being awarded the prestigious Skytrax World Airport Awards for the second year in a row.
